When “junk” gets new life: 48 motors overhauled

Servi received 48 Poclain cam motor that had been scrapped by a third party. After thorough review, repair and testing, they are now “good as new” – ready for many new operating hours.

From scrapping to overhaul – step by step

Upon receipt, each engine was assessed based on our standardized engine checklist.

Here, checks were made on, among other things:

  • External condition and environmental
  • protection
  • Springs, seals and main shaft
  • Bearings and housing
  • Camber, valves and pistons

Where third parties saw defects, we saw repairable components. Wear on the distribution valve and bearing was typical, but within what can be restored through our machining and parts regeneration.

In the video, service technician Signe Monsen shows how the engine was overhauled and how the engine was reassembled.

Precision testing ensures performance

After overhaul, each engine undergoes a function test and leak check in our own test benches. Only engines that meet the requirements for operational reliability and performance are sent to the customer.

The tests after the overhaul showed that all 48 engines now perform at the level of factory-new quality.

What is a Poclain cam motor?

The engine we have overhauled here is a cam ring engine – a type of radial piston motor – where the pistons move in a circle and press against a rotating cam ring. This provides high torque, low speed and robust and compact operation – perfect for demanding industrial applications.

But even these durable components need maintenance. Over time, wear on springs, bearings, seals or shafts can lead to failure – and in some cases, the engines are mistakenly considered uneconomical to repair.

Sustainability in practice

By overhauling rather than scrapping:

  • We saved over 1000 kg of metal from becoming scrap

  • Avoided unnecessary CO₂ emissions associated with the production and transport of new engines

  • Reduced resource use – both for the customer and the environment

In this case, the overhaul was simple and very profitable. For more extensive jobs, the price can approach new purchase, but then the short delivery time - which is obtained by overhauling rather than buying new - is often crucial for the customer.

Expertise that counts

This project clearly shows the value of technical insight and thorough troubleshooting. At Servi, overhaul is about more than just technique – it’s about sustainability, precision and extended service life.

Wrecked for some, but with Servi’s expertise the engine could be revived and perform its function even further.

We combine practical experience, tools and documented processes – and it makes a difference.
